Upper Kangaroo Valley

Kangaroo Valley house was designed by Alexander for himself and his partner as a weekend escape and completed in 2005.

Alexander’s extensive use of concrete, steel, glass and wood plus his obsession with adapting commercial and industrial items for use in a domestic setting meant a result would never be “suburban” (Alex’s favored term).

A weekender with a difference, simple light and robust on a 40 hectare, virtually inaccessible escarpment in kangaroo valley, with lush mountain drops.

AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION, KIRIBATI

The Design.
It should be noted how this team, whilst addressing all the requirements of DFAT’s Pacific Island Strategy, has purposefully focused energies on two items of the total build.
The Head of Mission (HOM) residence and the Three Australian Based Staff Residences.

This approach has allowed time to properly address all the key objectives outlined in the Performance Specifications and to illustrate how these solutions can be adopted across all the AHC facilities cited in the Performance Specification.

The predominant features of this design approach includes a standardized Plug & Play bespoke modular building system that allows for:

#  High flexibility in design configuration.
#  Adaptable interior space allocations across all
     building types.
#  Positive and negative space creation for
     Interior/Exterior spaces.
#  Ease of site installation.
#  High prefabrication content to minimize local
     labour and materials content.
#  Ease of replication across many and varying site
     conditions.
#  Extremely high durability during transportation,
installation and improved Whole of Life
     maintenance costs.
#  Ease of disassembly and relocatability for reuse on
     or off the island.
#  Allows for minimal support structures in the
under croft spaces allowing for recreational use in
    shaded space.
#  High three-dimensional building articulation
allowing for optimal cross breeze ventilation
through, above and below all structures.

In summery, our reusable modular system not only provides the above benefits, but also maximizes sustainability through re usability of all building elements as well as minimizing the environmental impact on the site at End of Life or the Change of Use.

The most notable feature of our design is the fly-roof. Designed to shade the structures whilst directing the heat away using natural high and low atmospheric pressures, this system has been tried and proven in many of our previous jobs.

Storm water house i

Using 16 ton concrete storm water culverts, this eccentric dream hideaway sits perched overlooking the Fish River on a small rural property just outside of Tarana, NSW.

Despite being built from concrete which itself is high in embodied energy, the dwelling will stand the test of time.
The passive solar aspects of this design will not be fully realized until the fiber cement shade awnings are installed along the north and west walls and large curtains hang over the exposed glass areas.
Stainless steel cables are embedded on the external facade, for a future green wall.

The existing dam supplies water to the newly planted orchard and gardens. Surprisingly little waste was generated during the build partly due to the prefabricated nature of this building.
Having a small footprint the house is heated by hydronic underfloor heating.

With 2 slow combustion heaters providing ambiance.

The house runs from a 3.5kW stand alone solar system so hair dryers and toasters are a thing of the past.

A beach and farm escape located on the lush green hills of Gerroa that roll down to the ocean on the stunning South Coast of NSW.

The Shed is nestled between Gerringong Golf Course and Seven Mile Beach, only 90 minutes from Sydney and 10 minutes to Berry and Kiama.

The Shed celebrates an industrial aesthetic with
soaring 5 metre ceilings, expansive use of glass,
concrete floors and stunning views.
A pool and fireplace make it the perfect Summer and Winter escape.

This magnificent steel and glass dual pavilion- style contemporary home sits quietly on a large open level shelf and enjoys commanding, panoramic views of Kangaroo Valley from sunrise to sunset.
Multiple sets of glass bi-fold doors and Louvre windows all facing sunny due north allow 180-degree uninterrupted views across the valley from multiple vantage points.

Set on twelve pristine, easy-care acres, the functional yet cleverly conceived living, dining and kitchen areas at one end are connected by a soaring breezeway and atrium with citrus orchard to the sleeping zone which offers three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
The luxurious master suite opens out to the world through stackable glass doors and has a private en-suite bathroom with walk-in rain shower and free-standing bath.

proto house ii

This extraordinary home has been designed to leave as small an impact on the environment as possible yet a huge impact on those who stay there.

The robust black barn is set on just 10 acres over looking the valley back towards the village. Constructed of steel, glass and polished concrete floors with an industrial feel throughout, this Eco home is entirely off the grid and Solar powered.

The four queen bedroom pods accessed on the second level each have their own en suite shower rooms and toilets, the third also having a free standing bath, allowing you to simply lay there and look at the magical views.

The open lounge-dining and industrial kitchen area is enhanced with stunning artwork and lighting.

The retractable glass doors on three sides bring the outside in and allows the air to freely circulate and flow yet insulated against the cooler winter winds.

BELLEVUE HILL RESIDENCE

A Modern Black & White multi level residence.

black star

Black Star is a boutique luxury accommodation in Kangaroo Valley.
Pass through the gates onto the 5 acre residence, and the drama continues, as woodland peels away to reveal the house itself; an instantly grand, yet contemporary take on a traditional black barn, framed against arguably the most iconic view of Barrengarry Mountain the area has to offer.

Black Star has been thoughtfully designed to maximize the beauty of the valleys contrasting seasons: from the snug warmth of its iconic central fireplace on a cold winter night, to its ingenious bi-fold doors that open up the interior space to the wraparound exterior deck, allowing a perfect spot to both BBQ and dine outside on a summer night, whilst taking in the breathtaking spectacle of the mountain beyond.

Australian galleries

Australian Galleries came to Sydney from Melbourne over two decades ago. I was asked to redesign an existing site, which included the facade of a Victorian terrace on the street-front, and an unattractive two story warehouse at the rear of the site.

The photo-montage to the right is an illustration of this new proposal and as is.
